(Tony Avanti, private eye, accepts an assignment to locate...)
Tony Avanti, private eye, accepts an assignment to locate a missing wife from a lawyer who is acting as an intermediary for an anonymous client. The lawyer is handling the matter for an out-ot-town relative. It's an embarrassment, since the traveling lover-companion to the missing wife is a cousin to the cuckolded husband--a monumental show of disrespect all-around. Tony is to locate the pair only, with no contact whatsoever. The identities of the cuckolded husband in Arizona and the interested relative in Trenton, New Jersey are never revealed to Tony--on purpose. But Tony's no dummy, sensing they're "connected." With the help of his WASP female companion, Tony locates the fugitive couple and wraps up the case quickly (maybe a little too quickly) and celebrates later with his Amanda in Atlantic City that weekend, hoping to relax and to do a little gambling. He even hits a small jackpot. Everything is "coming up roses" for him. But the good times are short lived when Tony is arrested the following Monday after the police find a baseball bat in his car's trunk with bloodstains, human hair and skin tissue on it that had belonged to the now murdered lover-companion of the missing wife. Tony gets released on bail and immediately begins his quest to prove his innocence, working his way back from the employees of the bar where the victim had his contacts to relatives and the two men who had actually killed him. Tony brings in the killers himself, one at a time. He thinks he's safe and "home free" and that his lawyer, his cousin, Cheech, will be able to get the charges dropped, but Tony is soon the target of two hit men. He has to backtrack once more, finding out that it's the missing wife who has put out the contract on him. Tony manages to contact the woman through her mother, but because she can''t get in touch with the hit men to call them off, he has to solve the problem himself. He turns predator and hunts them down, and he has a confrontation with them in one of Trenton's many back alleys where he wins the right to go on living. Hey, losing is not an option for Tony Avanti!

(Child placement in the fifties meant like with like. Cros...)
Child placement in the fifties meant like with like. Crossed racial placement was not only unheard of, it wasn't generally discussed formally at meetings or among the social workers during "bull" sessions. It just wasn't considered appropriate, or in the best interest of the child. So when 11-year-old Willie Carter Davison, a ward of the state, is released from the hospital after recuperating from his first-ever kidney flare-up and is returned to his foster home by his social worker, Tom Torelle, the seminal seeding of a unique link (for the times) develops between them. Willie's foster mother, who had plans to adopt him when he was still healthy, feels the state did her "dirty" by not informing her about his serious health problems. She refuses to accept him back into her home. The shelter problem for Willie is abruptly dumped into Tom's lap, so to speak. He returns to the office with Willie in tow where he gets the entire staff searching for a place for Willie to live. But with a dearth of homes available for "colored" children, it's a no-go. Tom ends up taking Willie home with him; the emergency of all emergencies for a social worker. An even bigger problem--Tom lives with his parents in their home with his new wife, Colleen. His parents live in an all-white ethnic neighborhood, and a "colored" person has never set foot in their house, let alone live with them, even if on a temporary emergency basis. but they soon get the Willie Carter Davison treatment. He finds ways to craw into their hearts. And within weeks he becomes "our" Willie. They no longer see him as "the colored kid," which brings changes and problems, since others see him as the "different intruder," as if he were an alien from another planet.

(Tony Avanti, Trenton, New Jersey's "intrepid" private eye...)
Tony Avanti, Trenton, New Jersey's "intrepid" private eye, takes a European vacation with his female companion, Amanda, and his parents, Domenic and Carmela. They visit Montegrosso (big mountain), the hometown of his immigrant grandparents, the anticipated finale of a wonderful tour of beautiful, historic Venice, Florence, Rome, Capri. Even the May weather cooperates. But once they arrive in Montegrosso and walk (literally) into an inter-family squabble involving their relatives, their fun days are over. The Capotostos' problems become theirs; out of a show of respect and family solidarity. Tony and his father join Uncle Nino and his son, Alberto, on a trip back to the Naples area to rescue the family runaway, 17-year-old Tina, who's taken off with Raffaello (Raffie) Ostinato, a local Lothario of contadini (peasant) status. They get her back, but only after some violence; especially between Tony and Raffie. So, now the main problem is solved--right? Wrong! The vacation from hell has just begun, after Amanda is kidnapped for outrageous ransom demands by a vengeful Raffie and his brothers. And with the help of his relatives (including Tina) and the local Carabinieri officer, and after investigative twists and turns in Montegrosso, Tony and company travel many kilometers on foot to an abandoned hill town and its adjacent Norman-built castle relic, where they rescue Amanda, vigilante-style. But their reception back in Montegrosso turns into another battle for survival with the remaining Ostinatos. The results are a mixed blessing at best for Tony, his relatives, and Amanda. He sums it up in the end with the line: "Life is a soap opera, folks."
