Carmen Elena Zapata Sánchez is a Colombian petroleum engineer, professor, and environmental researcher at the National University of Colombia. Her work has focused on air-quality monitoring, environmental management, petroleum and fuel studies, and metrological quality assurance through the University’s CALAIRE laboratory and the Aburrá Valley air-quality network.
Background
Carmen Elena Zapata Sánchez was born in Medellín, Antioquia, Colombia, on August 10, 1951. She developed her professional career in Colombia’s petroleum, engineering, university, and environmental sectors, later becoming associated with the National University of Colombia’s Medellín campus and its Faculty of Mines.
Education
Zapata Sánchez studied engineering at the National University of Colombia and completed her petroleum engineering degree in 1986. She subsequently pursued postgraduate study in water and environmental science at Bournemouth University in England, completing a Master of Science in Water Environment in 1995. Her education connected petroleum engineering with environmental analysis and later supported her academic and research work in air quality, environmental management, and industrial pollution.
Career
Zapata Sánchez began her professional career as an engineer at Ecopetrol from 1978 to 1979 and then served as plant chief at SOCOL from 1979 to 1980. She joined the National University of Colombia, where she worked as a professor from 1990 to 2000, followed by research and coordination responsibilities in the University’s oil and gas unit in 2000. Her later work at the University’s Medellín campus concentrated increasingly on environmental engineering and air-quality research. She served as director of the Aburrá Valley Air Quality Monitoring Network from 2004 to 2016 and participated in studies of particulate matter, acid rain, fuel quality, emissions, and environmental impacts. In 2008 she was principal investigator for the National University’s report on the characterization of fuels at distribution and service sites. She has also served as head of the University’s Environmental Management Office and as a professor in the Department of Geosciences and Environment of the Faculty of Mines. As director of the CALAIRE Air Quality Laboratory, she has worked on the validity, traceability, and metrological assurance of air-quality data. Under her direction, CALAIRE became a designated institute for the amount-of-substance measurement of ozone by photometry through Resolution 263 of Colombia’s National Metrology Institute in 2023.
Achievements
Directed the Aburrá Valley Air Quality Monitoring Network from 2004 to 2016 and contributed to research on particulate matter, acid rain, fuel quality, and environmental pollution.
Led the CALAIRE Air Quality Laboratory’s work toward metrological recognition and its designation in 2023 as an institute for amount-of-substance measurements of ozone by photometry.
Served as principal investigator for the National University of Colombia’s 2008 study on the characterization of fuels at distribution and service sites.
