Carol Anshaw was born on March 22, 1946, in Grosse Pointe Shores, Michigan, United States and grew up in Michigan and Florida. She is a daughter of Henry G. Stanley and Virginia (Anshaw) Stanley.
Anshaw received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Michigan State University in 1968. She then acquired her Master of Fine Arts degree at Vermont College of Fine Arts in 1992.
Anshaw held the position of a faculty member at Vermont College of Fine Arts from 1994. She served as an adjunct associate professor at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago from 1996. She currently teaches in the MFA in Writing program at there.
Anshaw published the novel Aquamarine in 1992, her novel Seven Moves in 1996, Lucky in the Corner in 2002, as well as her book Carry the One ten years later. Her work Right After the Weather is forthcoming in 2019.
Anshaw's work represented in anthologies, including the Best American Short Stories, in 1994 and 1998, as well as VLS, New Ohio Review and Tin House.
Additionally, Anshaw is a painter.

Anshaw was married to Charles J. White III from March 15, 1969 till their divorce in 1985. Since 1996 Anshaw has been partners with Jessie Ewing. They were married on May 25, 2014.
