Carol Matas was born on November 14, 1949, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. She is a daughter of Roy Joseph Matas, a judge, and Ruth Gloria Matas.
In 1969, Carol received a Bachelor of Arts in English degree from the University of Western Ontario. Then, she studied at the Actors' Lab, an independent drama school, in London, graduating in 1972.
Carol writes contemporary and historical fiction, as well as science fiction and fantasy. She first began writing historical fiction, when her Danish husband, Per K. Brask, told her stories about his parents' experiences, fighting the Nazis in World War II. Most of her books incorporate Jewish themes and eleven of her novels deal specifically with the Holocaust.
During her lifetime, Matas taught creative writing at the University of Winnipeg and Manitoba Arts Council (Artists in Schools program). Also, she served as a visiting professor at Bemidji State University in Minnesota.
Currently, she is a writer-in-residence at Winnipeg Centennial Library.
Carol Matas gained prominence as an author of books about Holocaust for children and young adults. Her work was translated into over a dozen languages, including Spanish, Catalan, Japanese, Taiwanese, Turkish, Dutch, Danish, Swedish, Finnish, Norwegian, German, French, Indonesian, Bulgarian and Russian. Her most famous work is a best seller "Daniel’s Story".
During her lifetime, Carol received many awards, including Geoffrey Bilson Award for Historical Fiction for Young People in 1988, Sydney Taylor Book Award in 1989 and 1993, Ruth and Sylvia Schwartz Children's Book Award in 1993, Manitoba Young Readers' Choice Award in 1996 and others.
Carol's books were included on many honour lists, such as the ALA notable list, The New York Times Review notable list, The New York Public Library list for the Teen Age and others. She was also twice nominated for Canada's prestigious Governor General's Award.

Carol married Per K. Brask, a dramatist and author, on February 19, 1977. Their marriage produced two children — Rebecca Ellen and Aaron Samuel.
