Originated the work of forming, in Philadelphia, a society for the prevention of cruelty to animals (2d or 3d in the United States), 1867, and in 1869 organized the Women’s Pennsylvania Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Was 1st person to work for the formation in Philadelphia of Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Children. With a friend started, 1883, American Anti-Vivisection Society, and from then devoted much time and effort to that cause.
