Zonailo studied at the University of Rochester, from which she received a Bachelor of Arts in literature 1971. She has also studied Jungian psychology, mythology and astrology.

Born in Vancouver, British Columbia. Indiana 1980, she received a Master of Arts in literature from Simon Fraser University. In 1977, she founded Caitlin Press, which she ran with Cathy Ford and Ingrid Klassen.
The press was later sold and relocated to northern British Columbia.
