Carrie Fisher was an American actress and writer, who was perhaps best known for her portrayal of Princess Leia in the space opera Star Wars. She made her debut with the film, Shampoo and two years later delivered her magnum opus with the Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. Ever since then, her artistic abilities and skillful rendition of characters brought her fame and love from both the audience and the critics.
Background
Ethnicity:
Carrie Fisher’s paternal grandparents were Jewish emigrants from Russia and Ukraine. Carrie’s mother had English, small amounts of Scottish, Scots-Irish/Northern Irish, and German, and distant French, ancestry.
Carrie Fisher was born on October 21, 1956, in Burbank, California, the United States. Fisher was the daughter of movie star Debbie Reynolds and popular crooner Eddie Fisher. Her parents’ marriage broke up (very publicly) when she was a toddler, and she and her younger brother, Todd, were largely raised by their mother. Her father married Elizabeth Taylor, and her mother remarried the following year. Her father's third marriage, to actress Connie Stevens, resulted in the births of Fisher's two half-sisters, Joely Fisher and Tricia Leigh Fisher.
After her parents separated when she was two, she was raised by her mother and step-father Harry Karl. It was natural for young Carrie to walk into her mother’s footsteps and she eventually started to make appearances with her mother in Las Vegas at the age of twelve.
While her father was Jewish by belief, her mother belonged to the Protestant faith.
Education
Carrie Fisher attained her formal education from Beverly Hills High School but dropped out of the same to accompany her mother on a road trip.
In 1973, Fisher attended London's Central School of Speech and Drama, where she studied for 18 months. Following her time there, Fisher was accepted at Sarah Lawrence College, where she planned to study art. She later left without graduating.
At an early age, Fisher showed an interest in books and writing poetry. She eventually followed her famous parents into show business, first appearing at the age of 15 in Irene, a Broadway show starring her mother. In 1975, she made her official big-screen debut with the Columbia comedy, Shampoo. She was starred along with Warren Beatty, Julie Christie, and Goldie Hawn.
Just two years later she played Princess Leia in Star Wars (1977), the role for which she is still most famous. She appeared as Princess Leia in the 1978 TV movie The Star Wars Holiday Special, and hosted Saturday Night Live in the same year, wearing the character's trademark gold bikini.
The film was a sensation, and Fisher became a star. She embodied the character again in Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back (1980), Star Wars: Return of the Jedi (1983), and Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015). She also appeared in Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017), and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (2019) which were released posthumously.
In 1980, she appeared in The Blues Brothers with Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi. She returned to Broadway that year in Censored Scenes from King Kong, and two years later starred in the Broadway production of Agnes of God. Around the early to mid-1980s, Fisher struggled with alcohol, drugs, and depression while appearing in a series of largely forgettable films, including Under the Rainbow (1981) and Hollywood Vice Squad (1986).
But as the decade drew to a close, Fisher again came into her own, both on- and off-screen. In 1987, she published her first novel, Postcards from the Edge, a successful semi-autobiographical tale of a show business mother and daughter. She later adapted the novel into a screenplay that was made into a 1990 film featuring Meryl Streep and Shirley MacLaine directed by Mike Nichols.
Fisher also turned in a series of solid supporting roles in films such as Woody Allen's Hannah and Her Sisters (1986), When Harry Met Sally (1989) and Soap Dish (1991), in which she took a comic turn as a bawdy casting director. She later landed her own interview show called Conversations From the Edge With Carrie Fisher (2002-2003). Other television appearances included voicing the character of Angela on Family Guy, and making guest appearances on Sex and the City, Big Bang Theory, 30 Rock and Entourage. She also had a recurring role playing Rob's mother on the British sitcom Catastrophe (2015).
A talented screenwriter, Fisher helped revise many Hollywood scripts, including Sister Act (1992), Outbreak (1995) and The Wedding Singer (1998), among many others. She has also mined her own life experiences to create such bestselling books as The Best Awful There Is (2004), Wishful Drinking (2009) and Shockaholic (2012).
Fisher also returned to the film franchise that made her famous, appearing in Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens, along with Ford and Hamill. The film, directed by J.J. Abrams, opened in the United States on December 18, 2015, and broke an array of box office records, earning more than $247 million domestically in its opening weekend. Fisher also completed filming the eighth episode of the Star Wars saga, The Last Jedi, which hit theaters in December 2017.
In November 2016, she released The Princess Diarist, a memoir based on the diaries she wrote while filming the original Star Wars trilogy. In the book, Fisher reveals that she had an affair with co-star Ford in 1976 during the filming of the first movie. She later won a posthumous Grammy in the Best Spoken Word Album category for her reading of the book.

Religion
Carrie Fisher wasn’t the religious type. Fisher described herself as an "enthusiastic agnostic who would be happy to be shown that there is a God." Her parents raised her as a Protestant, but they often attended Jewish services since her father made it known that this was his faith.
Politics
Fisher made it clear that she was not fond of the last two presidents (Trump and Obama). She stated on Twitter boldly that they should have been replaced with another candidate.
Views
Fisher used her star power, wealth, and role as a public figure to help many AIDS and HIV charities. Fisher was a supporter and advocate for several causes, including women's advocacy, animal rights, and LGBT causes.
Quotations:
"Resentment is like drinking poison and waiting for the other person to die."
"If my life wasn't funny it would just be true, and that is unacceptable."
"I was born into a big celebrity. It could only diminish."
"I was street-smart, but unfortunately the street was Rodeo Drive."
Personality
Fisher was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and spoke on this topic to thousands of psychiatrists assembled for the American Psychiatric Association's Annual Meeting in May 2004 in New York City. In 1998, she checked into a substance-abuse program for addiction to prescription drugs. Fisher was open about discussing her diagnosis of bipolar disorder and struggles with drug addiction. In her memoir Shockoholic, Fisher details how multiple drugs, including Lithium, didn’t help her with the disorder nearly as much an electroconvulsive stimulation therapy.
In her later years, Fisher had an emotional support animal, a French Bulldog named Gary, whom she brought to numerous appearances and interviews. Following her death, reports indicated that Fisher's daughter Billie Lourd would take care of Gary.
When Carrie Fisher learned her friend had been assaulted by a Hollywood film executive, she personally went to his office and delivered Tiffany’s package wrapped in a white bow. Inside was a freshly butchered cow’s tongue and a note that read, “If you ever touch my darling Heather or any other woman again, the next delivery will be something of yours in a much smaller box!”
Physical Characteristics:
Fisher was a petite woman. Standing at 5’1, she had to shoot many of her scenes as Princess Leia with a box used to put her on eye-level with her co-star Harrison Ford - who was an entire foot taller than she was.
