In 1946 he was elected to the Tasmanian House of Assembly as one of the Labor members for Darwin. He served as a minister from 1948. In 1956 he resigned from the ministry and the Labor Party, and joined the Liberal Party.
With the exception of Western Australian Labor Member of Parliament Vince Catania"s defection to the National Party in 2009, this is the most recent example of an Australian Member of Parliament crossing the floor to join the Opposition.
Bramich retired from politics in 1964 and died later that year.
