Admitted to bar, 1866, and practiced at Fairfield. State’s attorney Wayne Company, 1873-1877. Judge Company Court, 1877-1883.

Judge Circuit Court, 1885-1897 (Appellate Division, 1891-1897). Associate Justice of the Supreme Court, Illinois, 1897-1906 (chief justice, 1900-1901). Democratic nominee in Illinois House of Representatives for United States senator, 1907.

Delegate-at-large Democratic National Convention, 1908, 4th American Peace Congress, 1913. Chairman local chapter American Red Cross. Chairman Wayne Company, Illinois, Liberty Loan League.
