Designed many power plants and about 100 successful machines. Partly originated, and developed new forms of machine design.
Designed 3 machines (bolt-cutting, engraving and brickmaking) receiving awards. At Chicago Exposition, 1893.
Received more than 50 patents for inventions.
Original investigations in mathematics, mechanics and physics. First to solve problem of unbalanced rotating body on a yielding support. Investigated effects of inertia in steam engines, ball-bearings, cam-operated machines.
Wrote first description of modern automatic telephone exchange, and successfully, defended inventor’s rights.
Was first to make scientific investigation of inheritance of powers developed by exercise. Devised math, formula to represent energy changes occurring from generation to generation in animals, and applied it to explain evolution, of intelligence in man, et cetera
