Mitchell was born in 1981 in Muskogee, Oklahoma.
In 2004 she graduated from Oklahoma State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in chemical engineering.
Despite her disability she was elected as a President of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers where she did some researching and played on a wheelchair basketball team Later on she got her Doctor of Philosophy in biomedical engineering from both Emory and Georgia Technical universities. Currently she is a professor at Wallace H. Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering at both places.
Paralympic Games
A year before it she was a National Para-cycling Championships gold medalist for H1 criterium and was also Americas record holder in both 400 metres (1,300 ft) and 800 metres (2,600 ft) discus.
