Bessant received a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from the University of Michigan in 1982.
Bessant began her career as a corporate banker at Bank of America Corporation in 1982. Sixteen years later she was appointed a president of Community Development Banking at the same corporation and held the position until 2000. In 1999, Cathy became a president of Consumer Real Estate Banking at Bank of America Corporation. Also she took the same position of the Florida market at that corporation frm 2000 to 2001.
In 2001, Cathy held a position of a chief marketing officer at Bank of America Corporation. Then in 2006, she became a president of Global Treasury Services and Global Product Solutions at that corporation. In 2009, Cathy was appointed a president of Global Corporate Banking at Bank of America Corporation. Since 2010 she has led Global Technology and Operations, delivering end-to-end technology and operating services across the company through nearly 95,000 employees and contractors in more than 35 countries. Cathy is a chief operations and technology officer at Bank of America and a member of the company`s executive management team.
Bessant is ranked number 1 among the "25 Most Powerful Women in Banking" on American Banker’s 2017 ranking and on Institutional Investor magazine’s Tech 50 list of financial technology leaders.
She also appears on Working Mother magazine’s "50 Most Powerful Working Moms" list of 2018. Cathy received the 2019 Women in Technology and Data Trailblazer (Lifetime Achievement) Award from WatersTechnology.
Bessant is a chairman of the North Tryon Vision Plan Advisory Committee. She serves on the board of directors of Zurich Insurance Group and is on the advisory board for the Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan.
Bessant, along with Ross School faculty, alumni and students, summited Africa`s Mount Kilimanjaro, the world’s tallest free-standing mountain, in August 2018.
Cathy Bessant married John E. Clay. They have two children.
