Background

Sells, Cato was born on October 6, 1859 in Vinton, Iowa, United States. Son of George Washington and Elizabeth Catherine (Hedden) Sells.

Education

Educational public schools, LaPorte City, Iowa. A.M. and honorary Doctor of Laws, Cornell College, Mount Vernon, Iowa. Honorary Doctor of Laws, Baylor University, Waco, Texas.

Career

Admitted to bar, 1889 and practiced at LaPorte City and Vinton. Served as city attorney, later mayor of LaPorte City. Elected state’s attorney, 1891, and re-elected, 1893.

United States district attorney by appointment President Cleveland, 1894-1899. (successfully prosecuted the noted Van Luven conspiracy pension fraud cases). Moved to Texas, 1907.

President Texas State Bank & Trust Company, Cleburne. Commissioner Indian Affairs, by appointment of President Wilson, 1913-1921. First state chairman organization promoting Texas Centennial Exposition, 1924-1925.
