Background

Burleigh, Cecil was born on April 17, 1885 in Wyoming, New York, United States. Son of Lewis Edward and Nellie (Babcock) Burleigh.

Education

Studied with Anton Witek, Max Grunberg and Hugo Leichtentritt, Berlin, 1903-1905. Studied with Emile Sauret and Felix Borowski, Chicago Musical College, 1906-1908, with Leopold Auer, New York City, 1919-1921. Honorary doctorate in music (for composition) from American Conservatory of Music, Chicago, 1938.

Career

Instructor, University of Montana, 1914-1919. Concert work, New York City, 1919-1921. Head violin and composition departments, University of Wisconsin, from 1921.
