He began architectural study under the pioneer architect, William C. Whitney, and after a period of training there
He left William C. Whitney to become a draftsman in the larger office of Ferry & Clas in Milwaukee. Later he was associated with Elmer Grey until the latter's departure for California about the turn of the century.
During the remainder of his life Mr. Chapman carried on an architectural practice in Minneapolis, and between 1907 and 1916 was associated in partnership with Gottlieb R. Magney. Among his best known works in the city were a number of buildings for the Library and Park Board, also the Arm designed several schools, churches and private homes.
