Joined 1st Border Regiment, 1890. 2nd Border Regiment, 1893. Promoted to Manchester Regiment, 1900.
Served Waziristan, 1894-1895 (medal with clasp).
South Africa, 1899-1902 (despatches twice, Queen"s and King’s medals, 5 clasps, Companion of the Distinguished Service Order). Transferred to Lincolnshire Regiment, 1908. Companion of the Distinguished Service Order 1900.
