She gained a Bachelor from the University of Cambridge in Natural Sciences which became an Master of Arts in 1981, and in 1980 received her Doctor of Philosophy in plant physiology at the University of Reading.

She teaches systematic theology in relation to biological science - especially evolution, ecology, genetics. Bioethics - especially sustainability, ecotheology, and public theology. During the 1980s she was a lecturer in plant physiology at Durham University.
Here she also took a Bachelor in Theology, them moved to Manchester University to take a Doctor of Philosophy in Systematic Theology.
She also has a Postgraduate Certificate in Education from Manchester Metropolitan University, was completed in 1994. In 2000 she was appointed to a professorship in theology and the biological sciences at the University of Chester which she held until her move to the University of Notre Dame in 2011.
