Cui, Cesar was born on January 18, 1835 in Wil’no.

Career

Specialist in military engineering. General. Professor at the Academy of Engineering, Petersburg. Member of the Mighty Handful.

One of the most distinguished music critics in the 1860-1890s. Finished the opera Kamennyi Gost’ by Dargomyzhskii, 1866. Among the composers who put the finishing touches to M. Mussorgskii’s opera Sorochinskaia Iarmarka.

Achievements

• He was one of the founders of the nationalist movement in Russian music. A selected list of Cui's writings on music and military architecture can be found at List of literary works by César Cui. In 1909 and 1910 events were held in honor of Cui's 50th anniversary as a composer.
  
  He was awarded the cross of the Légion d'honneur.
