Paternosto graduated from the National University of La Plata in 1958.
In the 1960s, Paternosto created a series of paintings in which he left the front of the canvas empty and placed color on its side edges. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, he embarked on a journey of creative self-discovery through the Andean region of northern Argentina, Bolivia, and Peru researching the monuments and art objects of the Incan and pre-Incan civilizations.
Besides, Paternosto has had several gallery and museum exhibitions, including at the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza and at the Galeria Vasari. In 2017 he had a solo exhibition called "César Paternosto: Towards painting as object" at the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza in Madrid, Spain.
Cesar Paternosto is one of the most relevant Argentinian artists. He became internationally well-known in the 1960s with a series of paintings in which he left the front of the canvas empty and placed color on its side edges. His most notable works are "Staccato", "Modez", and "Crescendo Diminuendo", among others.
Many works by the artist have been sold at auction, including "Staccato" sold at Christie's New York "Latin American sale" in 2008 for $74,500.
