Chad Creighton Sweet is an American national-security and finance executive. A former CIA officer and chief of staff at the Department of Homeland Security, he later became co-founder and CEO of The Chertoff Group, a security advisory and investment firm. He also chaired Ted Cruz's 2016 presidential campaign.
Background
Sweet was born in 1969 and developed a career spanning intelligence, investment banking, federal administration, and national-security consulting. His professional path connected government service with the private financial sector and later with specialized advisory work focused on security and risk.
He is married to Julie Terese Spellman, whom he married on October 3, 2004. Spellman is an attorney and business executive who later became chair and chief executive officer of Accenture.
Education
Sweet enrolled in Columbia College in 1987 and graduated from Columbia University with honors in 1991. His studies encompassed political science, international relations, and East Asian studies. Columbia College, founded in 1754 as part of King's College and later renamed Columbia, is the undergraduate liberal-arts college of Columbia University in New York City.
His education preceded a career that moved between intelligence and finance. The combination of political and international studies provided an academic foundation relevant to his later work in the CIA, investment banking, federal administration, and homeland-security policy.
Sweet began his government career with the Central Intelligence Agency's Directorate of Operations, serving from 1991 to 1993. The Directorate of Operations, later renamed the National Clandestine Service, was responsible for the CIA's human-intelligence and covert-action functions. Sweet subsequently entered investment banking, working as a vice president at Morgan Stanley from 1994 to 1996 and at Goldman Sachs from 1996 to 2006.
Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs were leading global investment banks whose activities included corporate finance, securities underwriting, mergers and acquisitions, and investment advice. Sweet's decade at Goldman Sachs connected his financial career with international investment and strategic advisory work.
Sweet returned to public service at the United States Department of Homeland Security. He served as special assistant to the secretary and deputy chief of staff from 2006 to 2007, then as chief of staff from 2007 to 2009. DHS had been established in 2002 to consolidate federal responsibilities for protecting the United States against terrorism and coordinating homeland-security functions across a large department.
In 2009, Sweet co-founded The Chertoff Group with former Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff. Based in Washington, the firm advises companies and governments on national security, enterprise risk, cybersecurity, regulatory matters, and transactions in the security sector. Sweet became the firm's chief executive officer and has overseen consulting, mergers and acquisitions, and private-equity activities, including numerous buy-side and sell-side engagements.
Sweet co-founded The Chertoff Group in 2009 with Michael Chertoff, establishing a security-focused advisory and investment firm serving companies and governments in national-security, cybersecurity, risk, and regulatory matters.
As chief executive officer of The Chertoff Group, Sweet has participated in more than 40 documented mergers-and-acquisitions and capital-formation engagements in the security sector.
Sweet served as chief of staff to the secretary of the United States Department of Homeland Security from 2007 to 2009, coordinating work within one of the federal government's principal homeland-security departments.
Religion
Sweet has publicly described daily devotional prayer as a central part of his morning routine. This practice reflects a personal religious outlook grounded in prayer and devotional discipline, although a specific denomination is not established.
Politics
Sweet's documented political activity has been associated with the Republican Party. He served as chairman of Ted Cruz's 2016 presidential campaign, a role that placed him within the party's conservative and national-security-oriented political currents.
His public political work has emphasized national security, constitutional government, and the importance of democratic institutions. In later commentary, Sweet criticized efforts to undermine confidence in certified elections and stressed the importance of the rule of law, indicating that his political views have included a strong emphasis on institutional stability and democratic responsibility.
Views
Sweet's public commentary emphasizes the relationship between national security, democratic institutions, and the rule of law. His later statements on elections stress that political leaders should respect certified outcomes, support peaceful transitions of power, and place constitutional responsibilities above partisan advantage.
Membership
Sweet has been associated with several professional, policy, and civic organizations. His affiliations include the Association for Corporate Growth National Capital Chapter, Gen Next, the Young Presidents' Organization's U.S. Capital Chapter, the FBI InfraGard Advisory Board, the George Washington University Homeland Security Policy Institute, and the Center for Naval Analyses.
These organizations connect business leaders, security professionals, researchers, and policymakers. His fellowships and advisory-board participation extended his work beyond corporate management into national-security policy and professional exchange.
