Studied at King’s College, London. Emmanuel College Cambridge (Foundation Scholar). Was compelled, from ill-health, to give up reading for Mathematical Honours at Cambridge.
Ordained, 1858, to curacy of Shaftesbury, Dorset. By another breakdown in health forced to give up regular clerical work for five years. Curate of Folkestone, 1865-1866.
Vicar of Eastbury, 1866-1868. Minor Canon of Llandaff Cathedral, 1868-1871. Professor of Modern Literature at St. David’s College, Lampeter, 1871-1880.
Vicar of St. Edward’s, Cambridge, 1880-1892. Preacher at the Chapel Royal, Whitehall, 1211 1884-S6. Examining Chaplain to the Bishop of Llandaff, 1887-1900.
Rector of East Bergholt, 1892-1903. Also formerly Hulsean Lecturer and Lady Margaret Preacher, Cambridge. Member of the Imperial Federation League from foundation until it was dissolved. Chancellor of Llandaff Cathedral.
