The development over the past decade of functional electrical rehabilitation, a treatment method that differs significantly from conventional rehabilitation therapy, is described in this monograph. The book shows how paralyzed muscles can be stimulated to perform again by increasing the fitness of someone with spinal cord injury. The book is made up of four major sections. The first, on theory and background, explores the feedback control of paralyzed muscle movement and the applications of motor and sensory feedback control for extremity prostheses. The second section deals with stationary exercise rehabilitation and discusses the acute effects of both leg exercise and exercise bicycle systems, as well as chronic exercise effects. The third section, on ambulatory exercise rehabilitation, examines paraplegic and quadriplegic walking systems and considers cardiopulmonary and physiological effects. The fourth, final section discusses functional electrical rehabilitation and patient evaluation.
