Chard DeNiord was born on December 17, 1952, in New Haven, Connecticut, United States. He is the son of Richard Newnham deNiord and Nancy Petty.
Chard earned a BA in religious studies from Lynchburg College, a Masters of Divinity from Yale Divinity School, and an MFA from the Iowa Writers’ Workshop.
Chard deNiord began his career as chair of the comparative religions and philosophy department at Putney School, Vermont in 1989. Ten years later he transfered to Providence College, Rhode Island, where he took the position of associate professor of English department. Currently he is professor at Providence College and lives in Putney, Vermont.
DeNiord is also a co-founder of the New England College MFA program in poetry, and with Tom Lux and Jacqueline Gens he co-founded the Spirit and the Letter Workshop, a ten-day program of workshops and lectures in Patzquaro, Mexico. He has been a Poetry Fellow at the Sewanee Writers’ Conference and the Allan Collins Scholar in Poetry at the Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference.
DeNiord is the author of the poetry collections Asleep in the Fire (1990), Sharp Golden Thorn (2003), Night Mowing (2005), and The Double Truth (2011). His book Sad Friends, Drowned Lovers, Stapled Songs (2011) is a collection of interviews with American poets, including Robert Bly, Lucille Clifton, Jack Gilbert, Donald Hall, Galway Kinnell, Maxine Kumin, and Ruth Stone.
