Not illustrated. 1883 Excerpt: ...at each colliery, were determined, by developing into a horizontal plane (as in the case of the entire surface of the Mammoth bed already explained) the surface area of the coal beds in the exploited areas. This would apply, especially, to those areas where the surface of the coal-bed is considerably contorted by flexures. The areas of the coal beds, under the smaller surface areas, where the dip of the beds is approximately the same throughout, were obtained directly by calculation without going through the more tedious method of a geometrical development. After the surface areas were measured, the areas of the surface of the coal-beds were determined, by dividing the former areas by the cosine of the angle of dip. As will be observed, from an inspection of the tables, estimates have been made, in most cases, between the main gangways driven at different levels at each colliery. This has been done, more particularly, in cases where the bed has been mined on comparatively steep dips, and where the coal has been taken from breasts worked from a lower gangway, which has been driven nearly level along the strike of the bed, 300' from an upper gangway; the measurement being made along the dip of the bed. It was necessary, in such cases, to determine the areas of the beds between these different gangways; this was done by measuring the distance apart of the gangways on the dip, along equidistant cross-sections at right angles to the strike of the bed. From these measurements, the average distance of the gangways apart was obtained, which being multiplied by the length of the area under discussion, gave the actual area of the surface of the coal bed between the different gangways. In all these estimates duplicate computations were made, independent of one another...

He was educated first at the Friends' Central School in that city, then at the High School, and at the Towne Scientific School of the University of Pennsylvania, entering the university at the early age of sixteen and graduating as civil engineer, first in his class, in 1874.
While in the university he attracted the attention of J. P. Lesley, then professor of geology, through whose perhaps unconscious influence he was induced to give up the engineering profession and enter upon his life work as a geologist.
Career
As an undergraduate he took part in a survey of the raft channel of Delaware River between Easton and Trenton and was one of the organizers of the Engineers' Club of Philadelphia in 1873.
On the organization of the Second Geological Survey of Pennsylvania, Lesley was appointed director and selected Ashburner as an assistant, commissioning him and his classmate C. E. Billin, to assist in the survey of the fossil iron-ore belt of the Juniata Valley. Ashburner soon acquired sufficient skill to work independently and wrote the report on the Aughwick Valley and East Broad Top coal-basin published in Report F in 1878.
He was commissioned in 1876 to survey the counties of McKean, Elk, Cameron, and Forest, one of the most difficult as well as the most important oil districts of the state. This survey occupied two years. Realizing the importance of topography, as a first step he made a good topographic map, "contouring it with the eye of an artist who knew the geological significance of every feature and every curve".
In 1880, with the organization of the survey of the anthracite field, Ashburner was placed in control and produced what his chief described as a "chef d'oeuvre of geology as an applied science. "
He conducted the survey of 1880-1886, resigning in the fall of the latter year to accept an engagement as scientific expert with the Westinghouse firm at Pittsburgh. To this work he devoted the rest of his life, traveling extensively and enduring hardship and exposure that brought about severe illnesses and finally an untimely death in 1889.

The generalization which Ashburner was able to deduce from this work was of great economic value, enabling him to fix the limit of the oil-bearing strata and to place the calculation of the depth of well boring upon a scientific basis. He also wrote books on geography, history, chemistry and mining of petroleum and natural gas.
