He received an academic education at Union College, Schenectady, graduating in 1847 with an A. B. degree. He began the study of architecture in New York in 1853 as a student in the office of the noted ecclesiastical architect, Richard Upjohn.

In that association he collaborated on the plans of a number of churches, notably Christ Church at Ballston Spa, St. James' Church at Greenwood (now Arden) N. Y., built in 1862, and the Rectory of St. Paul’s Church at Troy.
Mr. Babcock gave up private practice in 1871 to accept the post of Professor of Architecture at Cornell University, where he taught for several years, also designed the Chapel on the Campus in 1874. In his latter years he entered the Ministry, and became the ordained pastor of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church at Ithaca where he served from 1878 to 1895.
