Charles Berger was Professor Emeritus at the University of California, Davis. He was one of the creators of the influential Uncertainty Reduction Theory in 1975, and was an integral part of the field with his focus on theory and studies on message production processes and the processing of threat-related messages. His research interests include message production processes and the processing of threat-related messages by intuitive and rational systems.
Berger authored more than 100 articles and book chapters and was co-editor on the "Handbook of Communication Science." In addition to his prolific contribution to the literature, Berger was editor of the ICA journal, Human Communication Research during 1983 - 1986, and co-editor of Communication Research in 1994 - 1999.
Elected as an ICA Fellow in 1987, Berger continued his service to ICA as President in 1995. He was the recipient of the ICA Fellows Book Award in 2002 for "Language and Social Knowledge: Uncertainty in Interpersonal Relationships", and received the National Communication Association’s Mark L. Knapp Award in Interpersonal Communication in 2008. ICA Past President and Fellow, Charles R. Berger, passed away on 25 September, 2018.
