(Excerpt from The Connection of Francis Bacon With the Fir...)
Excerpt from The Connection of Francis Bacon With the First Folio of Shakespeare's Plays and With the Books on Cipher of His Time Now, however absurd we may think the theory of the Baco nians in itself, it groups together and calls attention to a class of facts of a very curious nature in the life of Shakespeare, and especially in the life of Bacon, of which no explanation whatever is to be found in their accepted biographies; and the fault, or the folly, of the orthodox Shakespearians is this - that their antipathy to the Baconian theory completely blinds their eyes, if not to the existence of the class of facts in question, at any rate to the possi bility of their possessing any meaning at all; whereas, if it were not for the influence of an unreasoning prejudice, they would certainly bring them into prominence, and devote themselves to the task of elucidating them. The utmost in the way of theory, on which I shall personally venture, is this: That the facts indicate, not that Bacon was the real Shakespeare, but that he had certain connections, of one sort or another, with the literature and literati of his time, which he never publicly ac knowledged, and which have thus far never been recognized. This is a position which can hardly be offensive to even the most peppery Shakespearian; and should subsequent study of the matter show that this position is not warranted I should abandon it Without regret. (Excerpt from Index to the First Seventy Sheets of the Pic...)
Excerpt from Index to the First Seventy Sheets of the Pickering Genealogy The headings of all the sheets are the same, as they contain the first three generations of the Pickering family, to all of whom John Pickering (1-70. III. 1) and his wife Sarah Burrill (17-70. III. 1) were common ancestors. The descendants of the fourth and suc ceeding generations appear in the columns below the headings, each column containing the names of those who are of the same generation or degree of descent from the first John Pickering and in the columns containing the names and dates of the fourth and fifth generations, the names near the top are printed vertically, in order to save space, as the names so printed are in general the same on several sheets. In the other columns the names and dates are printed horizontally, and each column of these generations is divided into four subordinate columns, the first containing the number which belongs to each individual of that generation, the second containing the name of the individual, the third the date of birth, and the fourth the date of death. If any descendant has married, the line immediately below his or her name contains m, standing for mar ried, with the date of marriage and the next line contains the name of the wife or husband (printed in italics) with the dates of birth and death. In all cases husband and wife have the same individual number, that of the Pickering descendant being printed in Roman type, and that of the husband or wife in italics. In case of a second, third, or fourth marriage, the individual numbers belonging to the first, second, third, or fourth husband or wife have a small number (1 2 3, or 4) placed to the right and a little above them. If children result from a marriage, their names appear in the column of the next generation on the right, - the name of the first child being printed in line with the date of marriage of the parents, and the other children following in the order of their birth. Blank spaces are left below the names of the parents corresponding to the number of the lines occupied by their descendants in the succeeding generations and the name of the brother or sister (next in order of birth) of the parent will be found printed in his or her own generation column on the line below that occupied by the name of the last descend ant of the aforesaid parent, or of that descendant's husband or wife. In general, it may be said that the name of each child is printed one line below that of the last descendant of the preceding child of the same generation. (This book was originally published prior to 1923, and rep...)
This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

Bowditch received the A. B. degree from Harvard College in 1863 and the A. M. degree three years later.
Charles Bowditch served in the Civil War as second lieutenant, first lieutenant, and captain of the 55th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry and as captain of the 5th Massachusetts Volunteer Cavalry.

In his religious denomination Charles Pickering Bowditch was a Unitarian, so after his death he was buried with a Unitarian service.
Charles Bowditch was a member of the following organizations: American Academy of Arts and Sciences, American Anthropological Association, American Antiquarian Society, American Geographical Society, Archaeological Institute of America, The Bostonian Society, Boston Society of Natural History, the Colonial Society of Massachusetts, International Congress of Americanists
Massachusetts Historical Society, Massachusetts Horticultural Society, New England Historic Genealogical Society, Societe des Américanistes de Paris.
Bowditch's mental agility in working out the dates of the inscriptions and his feats of rapid calculation were received with wonder and admiration by his friends and colleagues.
His mind was an analytical one; he was a worthy foe of speculative theories and his studies and deductions in the Maya field were based on sound mathematical calculations. He was of striking appearance with a commanding figure. He had a very strong personality, trying to carry out the letter of the law and expecting others to do so.
He was forceful yet full of modesty, always with opinions but willing to reason, wrathful before underhandedness but just to all.
On June 7, 1866 Charles Pickering Bowditch was married to Cornelia L. Rockwell.
