Studied at Brighton College. 2nd Lieutenant 1st Sussex Volunteer Artillery, 1873, of which regiment he became Lieutenant.
Colonel Commander 1893, and Honourable Colonel 1896, in succession to the late Sir Julian Goldsmid, in conjunction with whom and the L.B. and South Carolina (United States.) Ry. officials he provided an armoured train capable of tiring heavy artillery in all directions from an ordinary railway line, and frequently successfully demonstrated with it.
