He was bishop of the Philippines from 1901 to 1918, bishop of Western New York from 1918 to 1926, and bishop in charge of Episcopal churches in Europe for the next two years. Between his election to the Philippines bishopric and his death, Brent developed a strong interest in reuniting Christian churches; he traveled extensively, attended the so-called "ecumenical conferences" at Lausanne and Stockholm, and was chairman of the committee for the continuation of the conferences. He was also concerned with the problem of narcotics and headed the League of Nations commission on opium control.
