He was educated in the city schools of Norfolk, Virginia.
Having acquired adequate training, the young man continued in Mr. Carpenter's employ as draftsman until 1905 in which year he launched his career as a partner in the firm of Ferguson, Calrow & Taylor. After practice in that association for a decade, he withdrew to establish an office with Harold H. Wrenn, subsequently in 1923 organized the firm of Calrow, Browne & Fitz-Gibbon.
During the thirty years Mr. Calrow was active professionally his work included schools, churches and various other public buildings in Norfolk. Of these the most important probably were: First Presbyterian Church; the Ghent Presbyterian Church; Hotel Lorraine; Blair Junion High School, 1921; Larchmont High School, 1925, and the Ohav Sholom Jewish Temple, the latter in association with Finley Forbes and H. H. Wren.
He had been a member of the Virginia Chapter, A.I.A. after 1907, and in addition to architectural practice served for ten consecutive years (1928-38) on the City Planning Board, and was formerly Chairman of the State Planning Board.
