Excerpt from Genealogy of the Spotswood Family in Scotland and Virginia The surname of Spottiswoode is local, and was assumed by the proprietors of the lands and barony of Spottiswoode, in the parish of Gordon, and county of Berwick, as soon as surnames became heredi tary in Scotland. The traditional account of them is, that the male line of the ancient barons of Spottiswoode failed, in the reign of king Alex ander II; that a younger son of the illustrious house of Gordon, who were then seated in the same county, married the heiress and was obliged to take upon him the name of Spottiswoode; but he retained, in his armorial bearing, the boar's head of the Gordons, which his successors, the barons of Spottiswoode, carry to this day. Charles Campbell was born on May 1, 1807 in Petersburg, Virginia, United States; the son of a local bookseller, John Wilson Campbell. When he was a mere child of six years, his father published a History of Virginia to 1781, which no doubt in later years had an influence in shaping the career of the son.
Like many Virginians of his day, Charles Campbell went to Princeton to be educated, and, graduating from the college there in 1825, he began life as a school-teacher.
In 1842 Campbell started a classical school in Petersburg and in 1855 became the principal of Anderson Academy, a position retained until about 1870. Campbell earned a reputation in scholarly circles as an antiquary. Much of his material was loaned to the well-known Bishop William Meade of Virginia, who made free use of it in his two volumes on Old Churches and Families of Virginia (1857). Meade published a letter from Essex to Southampton lent by Campbell with the acknowledgment that it was "furnished me by another true son of Virginia, Mr. Charles Campbell of Petersburg". As early as 1837 Campbell became a regular contributor to The Southern Literary Messenger; and he continued this cooperation for many years both as a contributor and as one of the conductors of the Editor's Table under Minor's editorship of the periodical. In 1845, he urged, together with Minor, upon the legislature of Virginia the securing of the Colonial Records of Virginia, and in the January number of 1847 Minor announced the publication by the Messenger of Charles Campbell's history of Virginia. Upon this work, An Introduction to the History of the Colony and Ancient Dominion of Virginia (Richmond, 1847; a new and improved edition Philadelphia, 1860) rests Campbell's chief reputation as one of the best and most extensive of the writers on state history. He was the author also of a Genealogy of the Spotswood Family (1868), and was the editor-author of Some Materials for a Memoir of John Daly Burk (1868) in a manner that showed his cordial regard for past and present historians of Virginia. As an editor likewise he published the Bland Papers (1840 - 43); a reprint, with Introduction, of R. Beverley's The History of Virginia (1855); and the Orderly Book of Gen. Andrew Lewis (Richmond, 1860).
