Joined His Majesty’s Ship “ Magicienne ” under Prince Leiningen.
Served on the “ Marlborough ” Mediterranean flag-ship, and after seeing service in the “ Amphion,” “ Royal Oak,” ‘ Racer,” he joined, 1868, “Galatea” under His (or Her) Royal Highness Duke of Edinburgh, and made trip round the world. Was flag - Lieutenant to Admirals Campbell and Lord John Hay.
Was present at insurrection in Crete. At the taking of Cyprus.
Was transport - officer during Lord Wolseley’s campaign against Arabi Pasha (Egyptian medal and Khedive’s star).
Appointed to command His Majesty’s Ship “Lily”. Then in the “ Philomel ” in command of East Coast of Africa. Suppressed the uprisings at Lamu and Witu.
Seized the Palace at Zanzibar.
Commanded the road - cutting party to Nana’s stronghold 4 days under tire, and led the centre attack (Companion of the Bath, African medal). In “Theseus,” went to Benin, and was second in command ot expedition against the king.
Saved twentyseven wounded from the fire that swept the city (Companion of the Distinguished Service Order). As Captain of “Empress of India ” was 2nd in command to Admirals Harris and Noel during operations in Crete, 1897-1899.
Commanded Medway Gunnery School, 1899- 1902.
Aide-de-camp to Queen Victoria and to His (or Her) Majesty the King, 1899-1902. Represented British Government, on Newfoundland Arbitration Tribunal, 1905. Contested Conservative North Monmouthshire, 1906.
Companion of the Distinguished Service Order.
