He held a Kennedy Scholarship at Harvard, where he received the degree Master of Public Administration (Master in Public Administration).

Educated at Rugby School and Cambridge University (Master of Arts in History). He joined the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in 1971. He served in four posts in Europe (Sweden, Italy twice, and Estonia, where he was Ambassador 1994-1997) and one each in Latin America (Brazil) and Africa (Mozambique).
His last job in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office before he retired in early 2006 was as Director of Protocol and Vice-Marshal of the Diplomatic Corps.
Currently he is Chairman of Spencer House, and also Chairman of the British-Italian Society. In addition he is Diplomatic Consultant at the Royal Garden Hotel in Kensington.
He lives in Epsom, Surrey. Charles de Chassiron speaks a number of European languages.
His interests include travel and art history.
He is also a member of the Advisory Board of the Three Faiths Forum.
