He went to St. Louis about 1859, and later began to practice architecture.
During the years he was active Mr. Clarke was architect of a number of of buildings in different cities, the most notable of which were: the State Normal School at Cape Giradeau, Mo., Central High School at Chillicothe, completed in 1875 and razed in 1923; the Third Baptist Church in St. Louis (14th and Clark Sts.), and the Fagin Building, a ten-story structure on Olive, between 8th and 9th Streets, his last work in St. Louis. In addition Mr. Clarke designed a large home for J. C. Pierce at the corner of Choteau and St. Ange Streets in St. Louis, known as "Cracker Castle.”
