Charles Baxter Clement was born on March 27, 1940, in Memphis, Tennessee, United States.
Charles Clement graduated from Princeton University with honors, with a bachelor's degree in comparative literature in 1962, followed by a law degree from the University of Virginia Law School in 1965 and a master's degree in law from the University of Heidelberg in 1967.
Admitted to the Bar of Tennessee in 1966 and the Bar of Illinois in 1976, Charles Clement practiced law only briefly before becoming involved in building hotels. He was hired by one of his old Memphis neighbors, Kemmons Wilson, who had started a hotel chain called Holiday Inn. Charles Clement, who was fluent in German and French, then lived in Brussels while he directed land acquisitions and construction of Holiday Inns in Europe and North Africa. He also lived in London while he worked with Armand Hammer of Occidental Petroleum to build hotels behind the Iron Curtain.
Returning to Memphis, he decided to capitalize on all the unused architectural artifacts he saw abroad and started an antique store, Old World Tiles, which he later moved to Chicago, where he lived on the Gold Coast. The business provided tiles for the Washington Metro system. In Chicago Clement next started the New South Venture Capital Company and joined the Chicago Board of Trade. For nearly 20 years, Charles Clement worked on the Chicago Board of Trade as a treasury bond broker and a director of agricultural options. There, he mentored many young traders with words of advice. In between his many business enterprises, Clement also wrote two novels: The Fairy Godmother (1981) and Limit Bid! Limit Bid! (1984).
