Secretary to Special Mission sent to Shanghai to negotiate a new Commercial Treaty with China, and an Acting 2nd Secretary in Diplomatic Service, 1901. Returned to Foreign Office, 1902.
Private Secretary to Viscount Cranborne, Member of Parliament, 1903, and to Earl Percy, Member of Parliament, 1903. Special Assistant Secretary Indian Foreign Department, 1904-1906. Returned to Foreign Office, Decorated for services in China. M.G. 1903.
