Charles Cottet was born on July 12, 1863, in Le Puy-en-Velay, Haute-Loire department, France.
Cottet studied at the School of Fine Arts (École des Beaux-Arts), and under Puvis de Chavannes and Roll, while also attending the Julian Academy (Académie Julian).
The art of Gustave Courbet and Puvis de Chavannes made a significant impact on Cottet's art. In 1885, he visited Brittany and spent several months each year in Camara-sur-Mer, where he went out to sea with fishermen and participated in religious festivals. Harbors, storms and scenes from the life of the Breton became the topics of most of the works of Cotte. Genre compositions written in a realistic manner, dark in color, the artist gave a symbolic character. In 1889, for the first time presented their works at the Salon.
In 1897 Cottet exhibited a series of paintings written in Venice ("View of Venice from the sea", "Seascape with Venice") at the Bing gallery in Paris. In the 1890s he was close to the artists of the group "Nabi", who had great respect for his art. With Eduard Vuillard, Pierre Bonnard and Felix Vallotton exhibited in the galleries of Ambroise Vollard and Le barque de Butila.
He visited Spain (1904) and Iceland (1907), which brought new topics for his works. After 1905 he turned to book illustration and made about 60 engravings. In 1913, the disease forced Cotte to leave the painting.
