Background
Charles Auguste de Beriot was born on February 20, 1802 in Leuven, Belgium.
(One of the great virtuosos in the history of the violin, ...)
One of the great virtuosos in the history of the violin, Charles-Auguste de Bériot was also an accomplished composer for his instrument. The compositions in which he explores the technical resources of the violin combine an understanding of the instrument with very considerable lyrical gifts. The 12 Scènes ou Caprices pour le Violon, 9 Studies and Prélude ou Improvisation for solo violin are both works of great charm and study material of the highest order, using all the resources at the command of the romantic violinist.

In 1896 The Strad described Charles Auguste de Bériot, whose playing created a sensation in London and Paris, as 'the founder of the modern Franco-Belgian school'. His Violin Concertos include plenty of innovative features, such as ricochet bowing, double-stops and harmonics. These techniques and other innovations in formal structure are, however, all in the service of expressive communication and stylish elegance. The romantic Scène de ballet is perhaps Bériot's best known work, while the Air Varié, Op. 5 follows a long tradition of writing variations on popular themes.

The Belgian Charles Auguste de Bériot (1802-1870) was not only a violinist but also a teacher and composer. "Scène de Ballet", perhaps his best-known composition, is a favourite with violin students. One such student was the young Itzhak Perlman, who included it in his collection "Concertos from my Childhood". The piece captivates with its beautiful melodies and refined rhythms. Charles Auguste de Beriot was born on February 20, 1802 in Leuven, Belgium.
Although not definitely a pupil of Viotti or Baillot he was much influenced by both.
Beriot was very successful in his concert tours, and held appointments at the courts of Belgium and France. From 1843 to 1852 he was violin professor at the Brussels conservatoire. Then his eyesight began to fail, and in 1858 he became blind. His compositions are still often played, and are good, clean displays of technique.

In 1845 he became a member of the Royal Academy of Science, Letters and Fine Arts of Belgium.
In 1836 Beriot married the opera singer Maria Malibran. She died the same year from injuries sustained in a fall from a horse. They had a son Charles-Wilfrid de Beriot (1833 - 1914), a piano professor. In 1840 in Vienna Charles Auguste de Beriot married Marie Huber, daughter of a local magistrate.
