Charles Dufresne was born on November 23, 1876 at Millemont, France.
Charles Dufresne trained as an engraver's apprentice and studied under the medalist Ponscarme.
Charles turned to painting after he was 30. Between 1910 and 1912 he lived at the Villa Abd-el-Tif, in Algiers, where for the first time he found leisure to employ his talent. Later he discovered the Fauves and Cubists and met André Dunoyer de Segonzac, Jean Louis Boussingault, and Roger de la Fresnaye. Such compositions as the Discovery of America or Orpheus, dating from the 1920's, exemplify the exotic allegorical nature of his mature style.
