(Sorely wounded and fatally disillusioned in the fighting ...)
Sorely wounded and fatally disillusioned in the fighting at Petersburg, a Confederate soldier named Inman decides to walk back to his home in the Blue Ridge mountains to Ada, the woman he loves. His trek across the disintegrating South brings him into intimate and sometimes lethal converse with slaves and marauders, bounty hunters and witches, both helpful and malign. At the same time, the intrepid Ada is trying to revive her father’s derelict farm and learning to survive in a world where the old certainties have been swept away. As it interweaves their stories, Cold Mountain asserts itself as an authentic odyssey, hugely powerful, majestically lovely, and keenly moving.

Charles Frazier, the acclaimed author of Cold Mountain and Thirteen Moons, returns with a dazzling novel set in small-town North Carolina in the early 1960s. With his brilliant portrait of Luce, a young woman who inherits her murdered sister’s troubled twins, Frazier has created his most memorable heroine. Before the children, Luce was content with the reimbursements of the rich Appalachian landscape, choosing to live apart from the small community around her. But the coming of the children changes everything, cracking open her solitary life in difficult, hopeful, dangerous ways. In a lean, tight narrative, Nightwoods resonates with the timelessness of a great work of art.

Charles Frazier was born on November 4, 1950 in Asheville, North Carolina, United States. He was the son of a high school principal and grew up in Andrews and Franklin, North Carolina.
Charles Frazier graduated from the University of North Carolina in 1973. He earned his Master of Arts from Appalachian State University in the mid-1970s, and received his Doctor of Philosophy in English from the University of South Carolina in 1986.
Charles Frazier taught early American literature, first at the University of Colorado in Boulder and then at North Carolina State University, prior to 1990. He also traveled extensively in South America and his experiences became the basis for a book written in collaboration with Donald Secreast "Adventuring in the Andes: The Sierra Club Travel Guide to Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, the Amazon Basin, and the Galapagos Islands" (1985).
Later he left academic life to focus on working full-time on his novel, and since 1990 Frazier has been a freelance writer. His friend and fellow North Carolina novelist, Kaye Gibbons, presented his unfinished novel to her literary agency, which led to the publication of "Cold Mountain". Thus, "Cold Mountain" was his first novel, published in 1997 by Atlantic Monthly Press.
His second novel "Thirteen Moons" was published in 2006. Based on the success of "Cold Mountain", Frazier was offered an $8 million advance for "Thirteen Moons".
His third book "Nightwoods" was published in 2011, and his fourth novel "Varina" was published in 2018.
In addition, Charles Frazier raises horses on a farm near Raleigh, North Carolina.
