After starting practice in Pasadena about 1880 he moved to Chicago, and for a few years was employed in the branch office of Shepley, Kutan & Coohdge, later worked with other firms in the city. Upon his return to Saf Francisco in 1899 Mr. Gottschalk entered the office of William Curlett, in 1914 started to practice jointly with Alexander Curlett for a number of years. With the father and son he was connected with the plans of a number of business structures in San Francisco of which the largest were the Phelan, Shreve and Howard Office Buildings, also assisted to designing Villa Montalvo, pretentious mansion of the Hon. James D Phelan near Los Gatos.
During later years after "Aleck" Curlett moved to Los Angeles, Mr. Gottschalk practiced independently. In 1922 he prepared plans for an addition to the First National Bank Building (Willis Polk was architect of the original structure), and designed a number of private homes in the Bay area.
