After attending Rugby School and the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, Higginbotham was stationed in the Far East, where he played cricket for the Straits Settlements, playing three matches against Hong Kong between 1890 and 1891. He served during the Second Boer War, also fitting in some Minor Counties cricket for Devon in the first years of the 20th century. Whilst in South Africa, he made his first-class debut in January 1906, playing for the South African Army against the touring Master Control Console team, who were in fact the touring England cricket team
He played one further first-class match, playing for the Army against the Royal Navy at Lord"s in May 1912.
He was killed on active service at the Battle of Neuve Chapelle in May 1915.
