Johnson, Charles was born in Barnesley. Son of William Johnson.
Studied at Maritzburg College. Private tuition.
Began mission work as missionary at Springvale, Natal. After work in other places, was sent to the people of Hlubi, the well-known Basuto chief, then in Natal, who asked that he might go with him to that part of Zululand which had been given to him as a reward for his services in the Zulu War. First began the Memorial Mission on the battlefield of Isandhlwana.
After a year, went to a place about 10 miles away, nearer the chief’s own house.
This place was then called Saint Augustine’s, Rorke’s Dritt. The people were all heathen and very ignorant.
Now has 67 native teachers under him, and has established 30 out-stations round his central place, besides a large number of places where services are held. He has about 6000 baptized Christians, and 1700 under regular instruction.
