(Excerpt from The Alpenstock, or Sketches of Swiss Scenery...)
Excerpt from The Alpenstock, or Sketches of Swiss Scenery and Manners: 1825-1826 IN making choice of a title for the following pages, the writer has fixed upon, one which would seem to entail upon him the necessity of a brief apology and an explanation. As apology all that can be said amounts to this: that no other was at hand equally expressive (when understood) of the circumstances under which the majority of the sketches contained in this volume were committed to paper: and as explanation, it may be at once stated, that'the alpenstock is the name of the long iron-spiked pole, in common use on the Alps, in the hands of the Chamois-hunter, the crystal hunter, and the pedestrian traveller; and therefore not. (This book was originally published prior to 1923, and rep...)
This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

Charles La Trobe was born in London on March 20, 1801. The Latrobes were of Huguenot extraction, and belonged to the Moravian community, of which the father and grandfather of J. Latrobe were ministers.
In 1832 he went to America with Count Albert Pourtales, and in 1834 crossed the prairies from New Orleans to Mexico with Washington Irving. In 1837 he was invested with a government commission in the West Indies, and two years later was made superintendent of the Port Philip district of New South Wales. When Port Philip was erected into a separate colony as Victoria in 1851, Latrobe became lieutenant-governor. The discovery of gold in that year attracted enormous numbers of immigrants annually. Latrobe discharged the difficult duties of government at this critical period with tact and success. He retired in 1854.
