Studied at Royal Naval School, New Cross. His Majesty’s Ship “ Britannia” (Portsmouth and Portland). Qualified Torpedo Lieutenant, Royal Navy Coilege, Greenwich, and His Majesty’s Ship “ Vernon,” Torpedo School, Portsmouth, 1876.

Commodore 2nd Class in command of the South-east coast of America Station, 1898. Assistant to the Admiral Superintendent of Naval Reserves, Admiralty, 1899-1902. Rear-Admiral (retired), 1902.
Naval Representative on the Admiralty Volunteer Committee, 1902-1904. Vice-Admiral, 1907. Served as Senr. and Torpedo Lieut, of His Majesty’s Ship “ Hecla,” and was present at bombardment of Alexandria, 11 July 1882, and subsequent operations on shore there (despatches). In the Suez Canal during the naval occupation.
At battle and capture of Tel-el-Kebir, 13 Sep. 1882, and subsequent operations there (despatches, promoted to Commander, Egyptian medal, Alexandria and Tel-el-Kebir clasps, Khedive’s bronze star). As Commander of “ Hecla ” at the operations in the Eastern Soudan, 1884 (Suakin clasp).
Jubilee medal, 1897; awarded the G.S.P. March 1900.
