(Author laments, that his occupation would not Mom nun to ...)
Author laments, that his occupation would not Mom nun to bestow as much time on the style and arrangement of the following sheets, as might serve to render them less unworthy of publication. He hopes however, that this attempt to undeceive his Countrymen comes recommended by truth, and that deficiencies in style will be supplied by strict adherence to Historical documents of indisputable authority. His object is, as soon as possible, and without scrupulous regard to refinements of language, or elegance of style, to expose the fallacy of doctrines, which have been propagated in recent publications; and either to arrest their progress, or to challenge a discussion which, by separating the grain from the chaff, may substitute consciousness of truth, for the wavering influence of erroneous or uncertain opinions. An anxious wish that a subject, so interesting to the I rish People, should be submitted to their consideration on S. Patrick sday, has occasioned some errors, as Murphy for Murray, at page 13, and SOS for 498, at page 51, for which he begs the indulgence of his readers. He also wishes it to be understood, that he is mat personally acquainted with any of those Candidates or Coadjutors, to whom he occasionally alludes ;and that, as far as he can learn, they are, mprivate life, persons of exemplary conduct, and unexceptionable characters, though their ideas of Ecclesiastical dominion may be imcompatible with the rational Kmerties of their Countrymen. (This book was originally published prior to 1923, and rep...)
This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

Mt Lord, THOUGH this volume has swelled to a size much larger than was originally i Dtended, it will not escape your observation that the diacusiions which occasionally obtrude, were necessary to the completion of your own design. Interpolated copies of ancient Charters are quoted as origmals even by such men as Spelman, Somner, and Dugdale. (1) Many, if not most, of those which are preserved by I ngulphus, as Saxon, are but translations, into which he haa introduced Norman phrases, that were unknown, or at least not used in England before hb own time; (2) and if thoie described by him above 700 years ago, are liable to such objections, it might appear arrogant to assert the originality of much older Charters in this Collection, or the forgery of others, without assigning reasons, which can hardly be alledged without some degree of prolisiity. From one Charter in this Collection, which is unquestionably genuine, it appears that when ancient Chartularies were burnt, the Saxon kings issued mandates for theb renewal from the mere recollection of the persons who were concerned in their preservation, ordering the (1) See the ccoimt of the Saxon dmten in this volome. Pontifical Irish College.
He was chaplain and librarian to the Marchioness of Buckingham and catalogued many manuscripts, including the famous Stowe Missal, now in the Royal Irish Academy. O’Conor was a man of mild and timid disposition, liked by every one who knew him, and possessing extensive historical and ‘bookish’ information. In appearance he was short and slight, of sallow complexion, with prominent but distinguished looking features, giving him as age advanced a most vulnerable appearance.
His manners were a curious compound of Irish and Italian. He was known locally as ‘the Abbé,’ and was for many years daily to be seen walking between Stowe and Buckingham, with his book and gold-headed cane, reading as he walked. Charles O'Conor was educated in Ludovisi College, Rome from 1779–91 and was appointed parish priest of Kilkeevin, Co Roscommon (1792–98).
In 1798 he was invited to become chaplain to Mary Nugent, the Marchioness of Buckingham and to organize and translate a collection of Gaelic manuscripts at Stowe. In Stowe O'Conor wrote Columbanus ad Hibernos (1810–13),a series of letters supporting the royal veto on Catholic episcopal appointments in Ireland. These were answered by Francis Plowden and saw him suspended from duties of parish priest by John Troy, Archbishop of Dublin.
In his duties as librarian he edited the Four Masters, and other chronicles from the Stowe Library as Rerum Hibernicarum Scriptores Veteres (1814–26), an edition regarded as unreliable. Connor experienced mental illness. After leaving Stowe in 1827, he was briefly confined in a Dublin asylum.
He died in Belenagare and is buried in Ballintober.
