The author, Charles P. Mountford, intended this book as a study of the Tiwi tribe of the Melville Islands, Australia, "made through their art, their myths, and their ceremonies." The author calls this book a preliminary study, and it must be evaluated as such. It is a welcome and valuable contribution, particularly as a collection of a large body of myths, descriptions of ceremonies, and large number of photos of Tiwi arts, including dance. This book is important for everybody interested with Australian anthropology or tribal arts and will be indispensable for future research. The author also stresses fundamental differences between Tiwi and Australian mainland cultures, explained as a result of if insular isolation of the Tiwi.
