(Excerpt from Russell-White Debate: A Public Discussion Be...)
Excerpt from Russell-White Debate: A Public Discussion Between Pastor Charles T. Russell (Millennial Dawn) Of Allegheny, Pa;, And L. S. White (Christian) Of Dallas, Tex Turning now from the life of the Master to that of Paul, we find an almost unbroken series of sharp contentions with the enemies of the truth. With the grace and polish of a trained dialectician, he was at home in debate, whether reasoning in the school of Tyrannus, answering the proud philosophers of Athens, combating the devotees of Diana in Ephesus, or contending with the chief of the Jews in Rome; and his speeches are models of systematic argumentation and impassioned appeal. It may be added that truth in all ages has flourished in the soil of controversy. It never fears defeat, but courts fair, manly, dignified, and courteous investigation; and when its advocates raise the flag of truce in the presence of the enemy, it will not be long till the enemy is master of the field. It is, therefore, a matter for genuine congratulation among all lovers of the truth that in this age of religious compromise and latitudinarian tendencies. Excerpt from Tabernacle Shadows of the "Better Sacrifices": A Helping Hand for the Royal Priesthood The author rejoices that this is true, and prays the di vine blessing also upon this new edition, whic was made necessary by reason of the electro-plates of the former edi tion being worn, and by the desire to have its general style conform to that Of the millennial dawn series - for it may properly be considered a supplement and sequel to the fifth volume of that work, kept separate for convenio ence. Aside from these typographic changes, and the addition of one chapter, and a few alterations in the phrase Ology to make some points possibly more perspicuous, thm are no changes. Indeed, no particular changes seemed possible or desirable. The understanding of the subjects herein set forth w. (NEW AND IMPROVED PRINTING! This book is a historic reprin...)
NEW AND IMPROVED PRINTING! This book is a historic reprint of the original scenario book issued for distribution at the Photo Drama showings that toured the US and Canada in 1914. The original book was printed in magenta ink with half tone pictures. It was originally published in both hardcover and paperback. This paperback reprint is a careful reproduction with some important differences. The cover was carefully re-drawn tracing the original artwork from the printed cover. The pictures have been created by scanning and carefully retouching the original glass slides from the production. These glass slides had been hand painted and tinted for the original production. The original colors and details have been carefully preserved when possible, with scratches and cracks being electronically removed. With the exception of 3 glass slides which could not be located, all pictures in the book are reproductions of the genuine, original glass slides from the 1914 production, or frames captured from the original motion picture portions. The type has been re-set for readability, but not edited. This is a fascinating book, not just for its historical interest but for the sweeping explanation of God's Plan as set forth in the Scriptures. It starts with the Creation narrative in the book of Genesis and goes through to Revelation, explaining history as it sets forth the Plan of God. The original Photo Drama was presented as slides and moving pictures, synchronized with narration from audio records. It ran 8 hours in length, shown in four parts of 2 hours each. It was written and carefully produced by Pastor Charles Taze Russell and the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society in 1914. It was a ground breaking production for its day.

Charles Taze Russell was born at Pittsburgh, Pa. , the son of Joseph L. and Eliza (Birney) Russell, both of Scotch-Irish descent.
His education was confined to that offered in the common schools, supplemented by some work with private tutors.
Received at an early age into the Congregational church of which his parents were ardent members, Russell revolted against the doctrine of eternal punishment and after several years' study of the Bible became convinced that there was no scriptural authority for it. Meanwhile he was supporting himself by selling shirts.
In 1872 he believed himself to have discovered through his studies that the second coming of Jesus would be in invisible form in the autumn of 1874. These conclusions he embodied in a booklet, The Object and Manner of Our Lord's Return, which obtained wide circulation. In 1878 he became pastor of an independent church in Pittsburgh, and in the following year he began to publish a magazine, The Watch Tower and Herald of Christ's Presence, which was issued later as Zion's Watch Tower and still later under its original title. Appearing semi-monthly, with no advertisements, and devoted entirely to religious topics, it ultimately obtained an Anglo-American circulation of 45, 000 copies, besides being translated into fifteen foreign languages.
In 1881 Russell published his most important work, Food for Thinking Christians, reissued in 1886 as Millennial Dawn, vol. I, with the subtitle, "The Plan of the Ages, " later incorporated in a six-volume series of Studies of the Scriptures. It attained a circulation of over five and a half million copies. All of Russell's publications after 1884, embracing numerous pamphlets in addition to Studies of the Scriptures, were issued by the Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society organized in that year.
Gradually he began to establish branch churches throughout the United States and later in Canada, England, and Europe, until there were more than 1200 congregations of which he was regarded as the pastor. Later due to his divorce issues, his headquarters were transfered to Brooklyn, N. Y. , where in the same year he bought the old Bethel Chapel under the Brooklyn Bridge. This soon became too crowded for his following, and he moved to more expansive quarters uptown, establishing the "Brooklyn Tabernacle. "
In 1910 he traveled to Palestine, where his speeches exerted some influence on the nascent Zionist movement. The next year he was in further trouble, owing to the sale in his church (at sixty dollars a bushel) of so-called "Miracle Wheat" alleged to possess new and very marvellous agricultural properties; exposed by the Brooklyn Daily Eagle, he sued the paper for $100, 000 damages in October 1911 but lost the case.
In the midst of these difficulties he sailed away for a trip around the world, during which he devoted some time to a study of missionary work in the Orient. On his return, he was given a great ovation in the Hippodrome by thousands of New York Jews. The scandals connected with his name do not seem to have materially lessened his influence. During all the later years of his life, aside from special trips, he averaged annually over thirty thousand miles of travel in visiting his various pastorates, including that of the "London Tabernacle, " one of the strongest centers of Russellism. He died suddenly from heart failure on a train in Texas, his last words being, "Please wrap me in a Roman toga" (Watch Tower, Dec. 1, 1916, p. 365), a request fulfilled so far as possible by means of an improvised toga made out of Pullman sheets.
The essence of his teaching lay in the doctrine that the world since 1874 has lived in the "Millennial Age" or "Day of Jehovah, " to be marked shortly by an international revolution of the working classes reducing society to chaos, after which will occur the resurrection of the dead, a last judgment occupying a thousand years, and finally the establishment of the messianic kingdom on earth.
Russell wrote many articles, books, tracts, pamphlets and sermons, totaling approximately 50, 000 printed pages. From 1886 to 1904, he published his major work, a six-volume Bible study series originally titled "Millennial Dawn", later renamed "Studies in the Scriptures", nearly 20 million copies of which were printed and distributed around the world in several languages during his lifetime. He was the co-founder of the Zion's Watch Tower Tract Society.
