He attended Bromley Grammar School (now the Ravensbourne School). He studied Physics at Woolwich university.

From 1978-1984 he was Head of British Broadcasting Corporation Research in Surrey.
From 1985-1991 he was Deputy Director of Engineering at the British Broadcasting Corporation. At the British Broadcasting Corporation he worked on the British Broadcasting Corporation Micro project and digital television
He was a member of the British Kinematograph, Sound and Television Society and the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers.
