Career

Doctor John Purcell, New York, 1869. Came to the United States, 1862. Enlisted as assistant surgeon, 63d New York vols., 1862.

Served with Army of Potomac, 1863-1864. Appointed assistant surgeon, United States of America, March 30, 1864. Btvd. captain, December 2, 1864, for meritorious services in the field being the 1st assistant surgeon in United States of America to receive the honor.

Captain, 1866; major, 1882. Later lieutenant colonel, and colonel, February 2, since 1902. Served various stations after Civil War.
